thursday, 10PM, carousel lounge...

As Andy Warhol says, 'An artist is somebody who produces things that people don't need to have but that he- for some reason- thinks it would be a good idea to give them.' It is true, my friends, that you don't need to come to the Carousel Lounge on Thursday September 30 at 10 p.m. to see/listen to The Casting Couch, but we think it is quite a good idea. And if, in fact, there is something that you truly need to do on Thursday, like de-fragment your hard drive, de-claw your cat or diffuse a city-threatening bomb or domestic dispute, by all means do these things instead, and come see/listen to The Casting Couch on Tuesday, October 5 at the Hole in the Wall instead. However, being true artists, we obviously think it would be a good idea for you to attend both...

juan cole asks If America were Iraq, What would it be Like?

things are *not* going well, but they *could* go better. why is the administration so bent on denouncing all expressions of unhappiness with the situation, so hell-bent on "staying the course"? seems to me a change in course certainly could help.

oh, i know! we have a chance to change the course coming up here in november! let's vote 'em out!

from pieter at peoplesforum: even Bush I had a clue what would happen...

Trying to eliminate Saddam, extending the ground war into an occupation of Iraq, would have violated our guideline about not changing objectives in midstream, engaging in 'mission creep,' and would have incurred incalculable human and political costs. Apprehending him was probably impossible. We had been unable to find Noriega in Panama, which we knew intimately. We would have been forced to occupy Baghdad and, in effect, rule Iraq. The coalition would instantly have collapsed, the Arabs deserting it in anger and other allies pulling out as well. Under those circumstances, there was no viable "exit strategy" we could see, violating another of our principles. Furthermore, we had been self-consciously trying to set a pattern for handling aggression in the post-Cold War world. Going in and occupying Iraq, thus unilaterally exceeding the United Nations' mandate, would have destroyed the precedent of international response to aggression that we hoped to establish. Had we gone the invasion route, the United States could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land. It would have been a dramatically different--and perhaps barren--outcome."

"Fifty years ago, the Authoritarian Personality studies attempted to "construct an instrument that would yield an estimate of fascist receptivity at the personality level."

This online, interactive F Scale presents that instrument in its final form. Additional infomation, including an explanation of the personality variables the F Scale tries to measure, is given below after the questionnaire."

The F Scale: Final form

My F Score is 2.26666666666666. "You are a liberal airhead," it tells me.

oh, and KVRX finally got up an .mp3 of one of the songs that we, the Casting Couch, performed live on the radio back in August. you can look at pictures AND listen to the one song, "flying machine," here.

weird mix. not very-well-mixed mix. but still, not bad (i'm on backing vocals and the glorious bass guitar).

julie+dutcher4evahhh!!!!!1!!!!

just in case you hadn't heard yet, there's a pending Major Life Change in the works for me. during our romantic weekend away in Santa Fe on the way to visit the parents in los alamos, dutcher took a moment to ask me to join him for the rest of my life for this remarkable partnership they call marriage. seeing as i've never met (and been loved by) a more amazing, wonderful, intelligent, caring, charming, and frankly super-duper man, i of course had to say yes. here's to many more years of our happiness together!

and check out the bling!

melissa's got a new domestic disturbance out. thought-provoking, as ever. go read!
