wha the fu...???

Virginia Lege Delegate John Cosgrove (R) has introduced a bill requiring that "when a fetal death occurs without medical attendance, it shall be the woman's responsibility to report the death to the proper law-enforcement agency within 12 hours of the delivery." meaning, you have a miscarriage, no matter how early in the pregnancy, you'd better call the cops and let 'em know. and if you don't? "Violation of this section shall be punishable as a Class 1 misdemeanor."

what if you don't even know you're pregnant? for that matter, what if you don't even know you have had a miscarriage? does that somehow mean you've violated some weird ethical rule?

and the point of this entire exercise? i'm not sure. maura at democracy for virginia put this question to a number of knowledgeable sources, and none of them could think of good, beneficial-to-society reason behind this bit of utter sexism. she even went so far as to contact the Hon. Mr. Cosgrove, and has yet to receive an answer. her conclusion is that it's part of the right-wing's efforts at "personizing" the fetus, just another way of keeping tabs on women, to make sure they're good and punished when they go out and have sex with men.

really, you've gotta read what maura's got to say. plenty of good links and resources that she's got there, too. forward that link to every woman you know, PARTICULARLY if they're in VA...but even if they're not. spread the word.
