liveblogging from a NOC in the central business district of new orleans. the police are looting as much as the "looters." chaos reigns. fascinating. sad. scary. fascinating.

photos from their experience.

they have a webcam going, too. watch looters in action!

prayers to all those along the gulf coast, especially to the city of new orleans, a place i've never yet been, and may never get to see.

for your listening pleasure, from last night's casting couch show at spiderhouse, a different drum, unplugged.

thanks to dutcher for the recording!

the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe production shots! there are some leaked photos that start on p. 4 of the collection, but even the studio-released and screen-captured images are exciting. check 'em out!

a motherload of incorrect usage...

check out the eggcorn database, where the authors have compiled examples of "eggcorns," phrases that have been changed and used incorrectly, sometimes in a logical manner, sometimes not. example: "in one fowl swoop, the rooster attacked the line of army ants leading towards the hens' nests..." see, it should be "fell" swoop. but "fowl swoop" is creeping into the language, and honestly, makes no sense except perhaps in the example sentence i just made up.

read 'em and laugh. or cringe inwardly when you see one that you may have accidentally used incorrectly (no, of COURSE i've never done that. nope. not me. nuh-uh).

on the casting couch once more...

Saturday Aug. 27:
Spiderhouse 7-9; Carousel Lounge 11 p.m.

You'll have two chances to see the casting couch this weekend, both of
which are on saturday... we're playing "Unplugged at Spiderhouse" from
7-9 p.m., and we're playing at 11 p.m. at the Carousel Lounge (with
Bright and Hollow Sky and Benko).

At the Spiderhouse show, we'll play nice acoustic versions of all of
our rocks songs. It should be a fun little experiment. Then we'll get
to play normal again at the Carousel.

Note: this is the last weekend you'll get to smoke inside the Carousel
Lounge. Bring cartons or something.

See you soon,

The Casting Couch

harry potter and the goblet of fire trailer! sweet. LOVE the dragon. oh, yes.

let the games begin!

so bethany and i have joined the austin 42 club, a local league where we compete as a team in tournament for the next few months...man, after having played the occasional social 42 game with these types, i hope we can hold our own! i was raised to play 42 by my mother and HER mother, Grandmother, a 42 stalwart who played in her weekly club for 60 years or so. may she look down from her eternal resting place with kindness and strategic thoughts as we play.

we haven't thought of a name yet, but we've narrowed it down to four:

rockin' 42, the logo being a "42" with a sideways parenthesis underneath, y'know, all texas-ranch-style and all.

the malcontents, with the lettering in chinese calligraphy-style font. if you have to ask what the significance is, well, then, you just haven't watched enough "firefly."

the flying deuces, the logo being a double-deuce domino with wings.

girlcrush. logo...?

of course, whichever we go with, it'll have to be printed on pink t-shirts.

tonight being the first official match, wish me luck. we're playin' a team called "ginny's boys," which makes me worry, a bit. so long as they're not a couple of those 90-year-old crack 42 players that frequent that place on weekend days...

ah, whatever. we shall triumph o'er the forces of evil, trump their trumps, win all hands, yes we shall*!

even if we don't have a team name yet.

* y'know, the power of positive thinking. and all that bit.

"One thing is for certain -- I never thought I'd see the day that a bunch of Harley-riding men in leather jackets would come out to scare a bunch of hard-working soccer moms because they were angry that the soccer moms were counter-cultural threats to authority."

amanda's experience at camp casey. it's heartbreakingly beautiful. this is such a wonderful country at times. let's fight our asses off to keep it that way.

okay, cleaning up the blog a bit.

first of all, there appears to be no more "the right christians," either. this is sad. mouse words is long-since defunct, but amanda has moved over to pandagon anyway, so 'sall good.

also, i am correcting the name of arran's alley, it has been renamed ethyl the frog. booyah.

furthermore, i am adding pharyngula, majikthise, and shakespeare's sister to the sidebar (believe it or not, i'm adding the latter not just because of the wonderful smiths reference. heh).

although i'm thinkin', what with the glut of science-y blogs out there, i might oughta start a science section. hmmm. maybe next weekend.

hey, y'all, if you're lookin' for something to do tonight, the casting couch is
playing at a party, and you can come check us out (other bands: the shim-shams, the shells).

directions:
1. east on 51st (past I35)
2. Left on Manor
3. Left on Rogge
4. Right on Exeter (5711 Exeter)

We're on @ 11:00.

new casting couch music!

okay, so if you wanted some casting couch music, but were having trouble with the myspace page,

here's the audiostreet.net page, where you can download three songs off the new album! yay!

oooh, and we got mentioned in the chronicle this week! it's a little, wee mention, but still. a mention! sweet.

whoo-hoo! the casting couch is on a real album! and we've been reviewed by the austinist! okay, so it's i eat records' just-released compilation CD, "appetizers & leftovers", but our track got an entire sentence! :)

...the musical equivalent of a triple-shot espresso - The Casting Couch’s 'Row Your Boat' is unabashed sunshine twee pop rife with lush harmonies and a gorgeously ethereal bridge.

ethereal! lush! sunshine twee!

it was a lovely CD release party downtown at Emo's last night, the casting couch had a good performance (i'm told. i couldn't hear much FROM stage!), there was a big ol' turnout, it was quite the place to be and be seen, not to mention, play your songs on stage.

sweet.

the austinist's favorite track on the album was the track by the fluffers union, them bein' the band we toured with earlier this summer, and also the band whose lead singer we're borrowing to play keys, horns, and sing with us! nice.

(our actual album is coming out any minute! well, soon. within the next few months. as soon as possible.)

more on chris bell and his run for governor from corked bats. some good specific stuff. yummy!

link from the burnt orange report

AroundAustin.Com has created a MOST excellent 360 -degree panorama shot of the view at the 360 bridge here in austin. very, very cool.

oooh, and, lauri apple's blogging! yes, up there in the wilds of law school, she's found time to vent on the internets, along with a couple other friends at their beautiful blog tres chicas! i'm so adding her to the sidebar. (hi lauri!!)

i can't decide if she belongs in the texas section or not. she ain't in texas anymore. but as long as i've known her, she's been the best kind of texan. hmmm.

okay, decision made. she's gonna get linked, texas-style.

it's a-gettin' hot in texas...

ah yes, the 2006 elections are looming just around the corner, and here i am, looking to see what kind of potential leadership texas has cookin'.

on the democratic homefront (democrats? in texas? you gotta be kidding me!), chris bell has just announced his campaign, but his website seems to be (thus far) a little light on substance. he talks good about education and health care reform, but offers little in the way of HOW this would come about. still, noble values. he's got a blog, however, and doesn't seem to be afraid to use it. i'm getting it into the sidebar, for further perusal and research. also, next sunday the 14th, he's holding a rally down on the UT campus. i'm thinkin' i may go, just to hear what he's got to say.

and then there's kinky. oh yes, kinky friedman, bastion of texan iconoclasm (iconoclasticness? hmmm. need more coffee), saviour of our four-legged friends, musician, author, all-round nice-guy crazy-man. he's running for governor! for real this time, i hear, and i'm interested in what he has to say, as well, coz, well, yeah. texas needs help. lots of it. and not from anyone at all interested in maintaining the status quo. so i'm linkin' his blog, too.

check 'em out.

ahhh, yes, i've been remiss in blogging lately. i'm so sorry, but i've been busy with

my new ipod! yes, i came home from work tuesday to learn that dutcher had gotten me a surprise ipod! so i've been busy downloading songs, uploading songs, arranging and rearranging songs...

i just filled the thing up this morning, couldn't get the entire "best of the flaming lips 1983-1999" (which i got from naz, oh so long ago) on the lil' machine, which is just sad, but in the meanwhile, i'm so happy with this! i had no idea i'd be so into it. it's just wonderful! thank you dutcher!
