why we have to get the troops out of iraq:

"I conclude that the presence of the US ground troops is making things worse, not better.

Let's get them out, now, before they destroy any more cities, create any more hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons, provoke any more ethnic hatreds by installing Shiite police in Fallujah or Kurdish troops in Turkmen Tal Afar. They are sowing a vast whirlwind, a desert sandstorm of Martian proportions, which future generations of Americans and Iraqis will reap.

The ground troops must come out. Now. For the good of Iraq. For the good of America."

go, read all of it.

well, it looks like houston survived, but i'm still worried about the mess Rita could still make if she continues to pour rain on a soaked mississippi river basin. yeesh.

in the meanwhile, last night i finally caught
the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, which, since i've read the books approximately 8,000,000 times, i can't believe i hadn't rushed out to see opening night. but i didn't. and now i'm rather glad. i mean, it was nice, and i loved seeing so much of the original source material on the big screen, even if all the actual Hitchhiker's Guide entries looked rather like iPod commercials. for a wonderful review that says a lot of what i could only fumble through trying to say, check out Lance Mannion's take on the movie.

there were incredible clouds out tonight, just before sundown. just like seeing those satellite images of the curved bands of clouds being thrown off the hurricane...but from the underside. i wish i'd had my camera with.

meanwhile, the rest of texas sits, watches a little battlestar galactica, and waits to see how the coastal parts of the state fare.

*blearily raising glass in general direction of port arthur*

godspeed, y'all.

New Orleans Musicians, Artists to Hold their Own Benefit this Sunday at Backyard Party at Nubian Queen Lola’s Kitchen

yum! and for an excellent cause! and good music! we should all go support our fellow musicians and mankind, and eat good.

AUSTIN, Texas (Sept. 8, 2005) — The Louisiana-born owner of an East Austin soul food restaurant, Lola Stephens, and her family and friends are organizing a party starting at 1:00 p.m. Sun. Sept. 11, at her restaurant Nubian Queen Lo-La's Cajun, Soul Food, and BBQ Kitchen, at 1815 Rosewood (corner of Chicon). Lola wants to welcome fellow Louisianians to her new home state by offering them the chance to stage their OWN musical benefit to raise funds for their resettlement. Every penny raised will go directly to the performers who are currently staying at the Convention Center, helping them set down some roots in the city that's welcomed them so warmly.

For more information, please call Lola Stephens at 542-9269 (restaurant)

and then, if you can't make it out there, but still wanna have something to do with some good eatin', you can always donate to the big-ass barbecue dinner that the good folks at crowd control records are puttin' on September 18th for the evacuees in the Convention Center downtown. they figure $2/person...c'mon. two bucks. let them louisianans have a go at the best food texas has to offer! welcome them to the Lone Star State in style!

check out austinkos, the version of dailykos by and for austinites and other central texans! also contains great news about local katrina relief efforts. ever wonder exactly how much STUFF they've collected at the freescale parking garage for the refugees? LOTS! (and they need volunteers to help go through it all, every night this week!)

also, enjoy this dailykos story about what's going RIGHT in texas with the relief efforts. nice. people rock.
