once roe v. wade is overturned...then what? Athenae speaks wise. just what IS the great American right wing going to do if/when the Supreme Court of the land manages to ban all abortion? work on getting rid of the circumstances that might lead a woman to seek an abortion in the first place? work on eradicating poverty? work on getting the hungry fed and the naked clothed? work on various other ideals that the biblical jesus christ actually wanted his followers to believe in and act on? or are they going to instead turn on those that they feel have sinned in ways that involve only their own personal sex lives and make darn sure that they're damned to any kind of hell possible, not only in the next world, but this one, too...

on which do you think they'll choose to focus?

(speaking of, i've been meaning to add first draft to the sidebar for a while now. think i'll go ahead and do that.)

(aw heck, i've been meaning to add firedoglake, glenn greenwald's unclaimed territory, americablog, and feministe for quite a while anyhow. here the are! enjoy! they're all excellent.)

RIP Octavia E. Butler (1947-2006)

damn. is one of my favorite sci-fi authors ever. i'll miss her.

check out her most recent book: fledgling, which just came out in september - she's such a favorite that i bought it the second i knew it had come out - full price, even (lord knows i'm cheap with my book buying habits...amazon used, here i come! except not for ms. butler). excellent look at what it means to have family, to be human, to survive. and creepy as all get-out.

also recommended: kindred, an enthralling novel with an unconventional perspective on southern american history and slavery. includes time travel as a storytelling conceit, but not as a main focus of the story; often shelved in not only science fiction but african-american history sections. i'm just sayin', it's amazing and will blow your mind. check it out.

and, basically, anything else she's written.

a good bio.

motorcyclists that kick ass!

Bikers roll to military funerals to oppose anti-gay protests

FORT CAMPBELL, Kentucky (AP) -- Wearing vests covered in military patches, a band of motorcyclists rolls around the country from one soldier's funeral to another, cheering respectfully to overshadow jeers from church protesters.

They call themselves the Patriot Guard Riders, and they are more than 5,000 strong, forming to counter anti-gay protests held by the Rev. Fred Phelps at military funerals.

The bikers shield the families of dead soldiers from the protesters, and overshadow the jeers with patriotic chants and a sea of red, white and blue flags.

"The most important thing we can do is let families know that the nation cares," said Don Woodrick, the group's Kentucky captain. "When a total stranger gets on a motorcycle in the middle of winter and drives 300 miles to hold a flag, that makes a powerful statement."

makes me proud to be an american with a motorcycle license, it does.

the genuine black cat and the buddy (buddy?) in actual genuine scooter-sellin' stores:

the buddy:

and the black cat:

the buddy ain't so bad from the front. except for that awful name! what up with that?! "oh, i was just ridin' my buddy." "just got offa my buddy, now i'm all hot and sweaty," or "brrr! it's too cold to be riding my buddy today!"

no mention of either, yet, on genuine scooters website.

thanks to kyounge and hamhock, fellow posters at the stellaspeed forums, for the photos!

a new genuine scooter model?

Black Cat® Marketing USA and Genuine Scooter Co. Announce Strategic Brand Association

Chicago, IL / Prairie Village, KS (February 16, 2006): Today, the Leading Consumer Brand of Fireworks in the US, Black Cat®, and the makers of Stella® - one of America's most popular motor scooters, Genuine Scooter Company, announced an exciting and innovative Brand association.

Genuine Scooter has been awarded an exclusive License for the Black Cat® brand, to be used in their upcoming, top of the line 50cc Sport Model, expected to be in dealer showrooms by late April of this year.

"As we continue to build on our Brand's strongest attributes, we believe we have another homerun with this partnership", said Adrian Toader, VP of Marketing and Brand Management for Black Cat Marketing USA. "The common fun, nostalgia, and non-conformist attributes of our Brands make for some incredible and unique synergies!".

Philip McCaleb of Genuine Scooter Company added: "This co-branding opportunity hits right on target to put a "bang" into the introduction of a unique product, the Black Cat scooter. An 'explosive' performer, it will be a blast for every firework's lover and scooter enthusiast in America. We feel this product will be an instant hit and 'collectible- right out of the box.' We are grateful for the opportunity to launch the Black Cat scooter through our USA dealer network and pleased that our partners at Black Cat Marketing share our enthusiasm."

The two companies are planning a variety of cross-marketing and promotional programs that will take advantage of the parallel tracks that the Scooter launch and the Fireworks season are taking this year. More details on these programs, to span the April-July 2006 timeframe, will be posted at the companies' respective web sites: www.BlackCatFireworks.com and www.genuinescooter.com.

hmmmm. i'm not sure what i think of this. i mean, theoretically, i should be all about black cats. but here i sit, thinking of the classic steel body and "real deal, not a 'retro-inspired' copy" hype of the genuine stella, and i wonder what genuine is thinking?

aside from the plastic-bodied TNG-ness of the whole thing, the graphics just aren't good! it seems like with a "black cat fireworks" theme you could have some sorta cool punk/rockabilly theme goin' on, reflecting the underground scooter culture and it's contrariness against both the harley crowd AND those steel can drivers.

i guess i was hoping they'd come up with some sorta small-framed metal bodied 50cc scoot, since i assumed they'd want a 50cc in their lineup.

ah well.

here's those new scoots. see what you think:

me, i still prefer the classic.

The Casting Couch will be playing at Beerland on Wednesday, Feb. 15 with The Shim Shams and The Shells. Come out and celebrate surviving yet another Valentine's Day...

The Shells play first, followed by The Shim Shams. We'll cap off the evening. We just might even play a few of the new songs we've been preparing lately...

And succumbing to public outcry, we'll be playing at the Carousel Lounge on Thursday, Feb. 16 as well, just so you can doubly satisfy your Couch-jones this week. It's a reunion, of sorts, as we are joined by Parks and Wildlife and the Distant Seconds, both bands featuring members of the legendary Trouble Down South, the band that kicked off my career as a Hot Bassist Chick, a seminal group that truly defined, if not outright coopted, the term 'cowpunk.'

see you soon!

check it out! my friends jef and lisa got written up by their local paper for their amazing cooking skills!

the article does not lie. jef and lisa are fabulous cooks...in fact, we invite them every year to our thanksgiving feast just to get to use them for their cooking skills (jef, we missed you last year, what with the meat carving and all...not that anyone else in the universe has any idea how to do this).

most excellent.

today i rode the scoot to work, again, was my third time! dangit, the last two days have been PERFECT, beautiful weather, no wind, but i had to go and get all CRAMPY (stupid cramps), and i didn't feel like i could concentrate enough to ride. but today i was all better! excellent. this scooter thing is much better than i ever thought it would be! i love it.

SXSW is coming up here in austin, and i'm excited about the thought of scooting to all the shows i wanna see, coz i'll get the BEST parking. aw yeah!

from cke. sweet.

i'm gonna scoot, scoot, scoot, 'til i die...

aw yeah. i commuted to work on the scoot today for the first time! there and back, no problem, even though the winds were fairly high and traffic and all...! including a couple of those indicated 55-60 stretches.

yay me!

man, i'm so doing this every single day that i possibly can from here until the day i die. i love my scooter. yes i do. did i mention (probably) that i've named him Starbuck?

**on edit: this was posted yesterday, which is when i went to work. then blogger had issues. so i had to delete in and repost it today. no, i didn't get to work on a saturday by 10:30AM...*
